Save the Sydney Opera House!!!!

So I might be being a bit of a geek here. I wanted to experiment with loading video files to blogs. Here is a great one about saving the Sydney Opera House by following digital preservation standards (told you I was being geek-y).

You can find more Digi-Man and Team Digital Preservation videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/wepreserve#p/u

Things to remember when we move

Be careful which brackets connecting shelves together we undo. The results might be rather domino like otherwise.

An aside

Photos make blogs so much more intersting!!

A library in a box

I came accross a few interesting articles on small libraries.

How about a library in a phone box? Sounds a bit like our book swap - anyone out there got a phone box that we could put to use?

Or, how about a library in a vending machine? The logistics of this make me think it might not be worth it, but interesting concept.

Acronyms

After all the pain of trying to think in acronyms yesterday I had to share this one I found this morning. I happened to be looking for a specific quote from the movie The Princess Bride and in the process found the following.

[after Westley rescues Butter cup from the lightning quicksand]
Buttercup: We'll never succeed. We may as well die here.
Westley: No, no. We have already succeeded. I mean, what are the three terrors of the Fire Swamp? One, the flame spurt - no problem. There's a popping sound preceding each; we can avoid that. Two, the lightning sand, which you were clever enough to discover what that looks like, so in the future we can avoid that too.
Buttercup: Westley, what about the R.O.U.S.'s?
Westley: Rodents Of Unusual Size? I don't think they exist.
[Immediately, an R.O.U.S. attacks him]

GL WI IM, PIR make me ROFL

Having fun with IM, but it is doing my head in trying to keep up with 5 plus conversations and learn this new language of acronyms. I can imagine it being a great waste of time!! I'm loving all the creative acronyms the people in my Web 2.0 class came up with, I'm not so good at it but it is lots of fun being silly...now I'm off to GBTW!!!

Wikis

Today we have been learning about wikis. Having created my So what does a ... do all day? page I went hunting for mistakes to fix. Found a couple of spelling mistakes on the Evidence Based Library and Information Practice page and fixed them up.

Now I'm hunting for wikis of interest to me. Found a great travel wiki, given my interest in Central Asia there are some great pages there for me to read and add to.

Time to play

So I'm having fun playing with my RSS feeds and seeing what features are available. I think it hilarious that you can sort "my magic" - as opposed to oldest to newest etc!!!!

I also like the ways of organising, by folders, tags, starring etc. Now I just have to remember to use them. In Outlook I'm very pathetic at organising my feeds even though I know I can. So will have to make an effort during this learing time to pick up good habits of organising.

Not sure if I like this more or less than using Outlook. At this stage it is just different and needs some getting used to. I think ultimely I'll find it good but I just have to get used to it first. My brain hadn't yet computed that once we stop using Outlook I will need to read some of my work related RSS feeds some other way and it makes sense to use a Google product given we will be using Gmail. So I will definately end up using it for work, not sure if I will use it at home or not. The reason I started using RSS feeds both at work and home was that I didn't need to go and look at websites each day I could have them come to me instead, the more the list of website I read has expanded the more this has become imporant. For work especially I find this great. i get a couple of messages each day about things I might need to know on the idesk or things that I need to know for my job, it is really easy to keep up to date with things without needing to remember to do so.

Feeding on RSS

When I was at school I used to love it when I managed to complete my homework in class - that is my aim today.

We've been learning about RSS feeds using Google reader. I've already been using RSS feeds in Outlook both at home and at work. So first step was to transfer my work RSS feeds across - the I-desk blog and our teams blog.

The came the fun part, having a play and finding other things to subscribe to. I subscribed to the following:

I've already become addicted to RSS feeds using Outlook at home. I can see this addication growing. What a way to spend my working day ;-)

Homework done!!

Phew!! (wipes brow) homework is done, now I can stop stressing about making time to do it before the next session on Wednesday.

Stop reading now if you don't want to read my rant!! (steps onto soapbox)

I've been thinking about commenting. I think the fact that you can comment on blogs can be useful. But, it really bugs me on some of the blogs that I read that people seem to make comments just for the sake of making comments. It also bugs me when people leave nasty comments attacking the writer, or the topic they are writing about, etc etc. I understand that as the blog writer it gives you warm fuzzies to see that people are reading and commenting on your blog but can't we have a real world conversation!! Is commenting for the sake of commenting really worth the time?? Must say though that this is just my opinion and I already know that in real life conversations I only comment if I think I have something of value to add, I'm just carrying this on into my blogging too.

(steps off soapbox)

Crafty happenings

If you've talked to me for any length of time, or visited our office in the last year or so, you will probably have picked up that I have a thing for craft. It is just a "slight" addiction!!

It doesn't really matter what the craft is, I dabble here and there, and switch my current interests from month to month. There are a few crafts that seem to continue to stick around, sewing, knitting, beading and crochet. One of my favourite blogs is Attic24. I love Lucy's cheerful view of the world and the bright colours she uses in her blog and her crochet. I'm also very jealous of her house and her town, one day I want to go and visit her part of the world.

A library in Oz

So it is time to catch up on my homework before our next Web 2.0 session - as usually I'm doing it at the last minute (well not quite, but nearly)!

So I'm meant to be linking to a blog about the library industry is Australia.

So here it is...drum roll please......

Mosman Library!!!! So why this blog?? Well, I like to know what library sort of things are going on in my area and my local library doesn't have a blog and the next nearest library only updates their blog about twice a year, so Mosman is the next best thing! It has lots of local events as well as library related stuff they are doing or think others might be interested in, and one of my friends works there so I'm always looking out for pictures of mentions of her.
